Klonopin

Klonopin (clonazepam) is a drug specially intended for the treatment of anxiety. This benzodiazepine can be also used to treat panic disorder and seizure disorders. No matter why you will be taking this medicine, it’s important to discuss with your health care provider any medical problems you have that may affect your treatment. If you have or ever had breathing problems, history of depression, suicidal thoughts, glaucoma, kidney or liver disease, addiction to drugs or alcohol, or any other conditions that you may find necessary to report, your dose may need to be adjusted or your doctor will have to monitor you carefully for some side effects that may occur. Never exceed the dose recommended as sometimes it may result in developing an addiction to Klonopin. Once you develop an addiction (the risk is higher for people with a history of drug or alcohol dependency) it will be more difficult for you to stop the treatment. You will not be able to stop using Klonopin at once, as withdrawal symptoms will be likely to occur, such as stomach pain, sweating, vomiting, tremor, trouble sleeping, unusual thoughts or behavior, and muscle cramps. Mild side effects of Klonopin are likely, especially at the beginning of the treatment. You will need to tell your health care provider if you develop any of the following side effects and they get more serious with time: frequent urination, dizziness, blurred vision, drowsiness, increased saliva, changes in sex drive, joint pain, problems with coordination, and unsteadiness. Otherwise you can carry on with your treatment as planned. More serious side effects of Klonopin are also possible, although do not occur too often. You will need to inform your health care provider if you develop any of the following serious side effects: hoarseness, swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, hives, and rash. Never take more of this medicine than recommended, as an overdose is possible. Seek emergency medical help if you have taken too much of Klonopin and have got such overdose symptoms as drowsiness, confusion, and loss of consciousness. Some drugs you are taking can add to the sleepiness Klonopin has been reported to cause. Make sure you avoid combining Klonopin with the following drugs: medicines for depression or anxiety, narcotic pain medicines, cold and allergy medicines, muscle relaxers, and sleeping pills. You will need to take Klonopin for several weeks before you will be able to feel the benefits of this treatment. Do not stop taking Klonopin without previously talking to your health care provider.
